Autism

The Finding of my True Voice.

Hello I’m Rodney Mills. I’m a 30 year old man with Autism. I have lived an amazing life that has seen me go from having no voice to becoming the empowered person that I am today.

Having a voice is essential for everyone irrespective of whether you have a disability or not. In my case it’s in these typed words that you’re hearing my voice. I use facilitated communication to type these words. This involves a facilitator holding my arm or shoulder to help me to better use my arm to type.

I've actually have a lot of stories to tell that will make this web page too long. So I'll be telling them one by one. My name is Michelle. I'm 23 with autism and here is one of those stories:

Giving Autism a Voice

Born in 1962, I was an unusually quiet baby. I began to have seizures that shut down my respiratory system at around 10 months old, and was eventually tested and diagnosed with frontal and left temporal lobe brain damage. Troubling behavioural differences which left my family desperate emerged over time and in stages. Some milder peculiarities, such as drawing detailed pictures up-side-down during early childhood, were also present. A diagnosis of “some form of autism” was determined.
