Hi, my name is Jaye Van Kasteren and I’m 29 years old, born in August 1980. This story is about me, my life and the challenges and opportunities I have faced.
I was born with cerebral palsy and had learning difficulties as a youngster. I was also an epileptic but thankfully I haven’t had any seizures for some years now. I grew up a pretty shy kid and was often faced with the challenges of having a visible physical disability. Thankfully mum and dad and my sister were extremely supportive and helped me growing up. Even today they provide a wonderful supportive and caring environment at home.
I completed Year 12 at Gepps Cross Senior School, north of Adelaide. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I finished school but felt that it had to be working with people. I love talking to people and being with people. I did some volunteer work with the Guide Dogs Association which I loved. But as the years went on, I decided I wanted to be in retail.
I have several things I love in life. One of these is my beloved Port Power Football team – go the Power! I also like radio work and have my very own show on Adelaide radio station 3D (93.7) on Monday’s. Having a job is also something that’s really important to me. I wanted to work in retail because that’s where I could work with people and meet new people.
I was assisted to find work by many people but Personnel Employment helped me the most to find a job. They assist people with disabilities to find jobs and they’ve been there for me from the beginning. They’ve provided guidance, support and advice with regard to my employment and other personal issues I face.
I’m still working in my first job some 8 years later, that is working at Foodland Golden Grove. I started here by sweeping and mopping the floors but these days I’m a Night Fill Stock Replenisher. The boss is great and so are all the other workers who are very supportive. Although use of my left hand is limited, it doesn’t stop me from performing most of the tasks required. I’ve got great determination and at times have really pushed myself to achieve all that I want to achieve.
Through work, I am also doing some study at the moment. Currently I am doing Certificate III in retail and when I finish this I hope to complete Certificate IV. I find some of the topics a little challenging but I am determined to get through and I’ve found that people are only too willing to help; you just have to ask.
I’ve worked hard and saved my money and now even own an investment unit which I rent out. Life’s great and with my family and friends, my great footy team, my radio work and a job I love doing, its all going to plan. I’ve tried not to worry about my disabilities too much, but rather have focussed on what I can do – my abilities!
